A Peachy lunch spot
We visited Peach - the vegan cafe and zero waste store in Newport, OW. Check out how our visit went, and the new friend we made.

Peach - Vegan Kitchen and Zero Waste Store, Newport, IOW

Storm Pablo is ripping through the Island,🌧 so we staggered into Peach super windswept and like two drowned rats for refuge and a caffeine hit.

Immediately we were hit by how chilled and friendly the team were, and the cafe had the best vibes for a really dreary Saturday afternoon. Everything about the place is really genuine and authentic. You know how some really good food places are really a great aesthetic with good grub? Well this places runs so much deeper. Water glasses are recycled jam jars with metal straws, you can buy grains, seeds and oil (bring your own containers, or grab a paper bag) and they're passionate about zero waste. So you can see why the place has a lot of soul.

Coffee was an easy choice. Two oat milk flat whites, yes please. Good coffee. ☕️ But the menu is so good, choosing food was another matter. We’d come as brekkie was ending and lunch starting - but our lovely waitress offered to extend the brekkie menu. How many places would do that? We’ve had a few occasions in other places of being 5 minutes late for the brekkie menu... so it’s lunch or nothing.

[hannah] Since moving to the Island I’ve become almost fully plant based, except for cheese and eggs. Once you’ve tried Isle of Wight Blue cheese, it’s hard to say no. I really wanted to try vegan bacon and vegan cheese so I went for the Tricken burger.

Amazing choice. A really tasty patty, with a kinda crispy outer coating a bit like a fried chicken fillet. Loads of salad (yes thank you) and cashew cheeze and coconut bae-con. Cheese and bacon have such a distinctive flavour because of the animal fats - I think it’s really hard to replicate that. Cheeze isn’t cheese (you with me?) but I really liked it. It’s defo got a hint of cheesy element to it, and the coconut bae-com added a nice smokey brunch - like crispy bits of bacon. Ironically I was never a fan of bacon fat (crispy or otherwise) but I really miss the flavour. I genuinely think I could enjoy a ketchup sandwich as long as I could smell cooked bacon. Like I said, I’m not 100% vegan yet 🤣 I can’t say bae-con is anything like bacon in flavour or smell but I did really like it. Add to it the (second) best chips I’ve ever had - it was a bloody good lunch.

Best part of all? I got to sit next to Harry the dog. Don’t judge the photo. He did like me, honest.

[tom] Sooo... I really like my food. For me quantity is just as important as how good it is. Normally I'm ready for a snack an hour or two after any meal, but this one kept me full all afternoon. Nothing short of a miracle. I also suffer from food FOMO - and the burger sounded so good - so I had the same as Hannah.

Great burger. Hearty, filling. If you're expecting a chicken burger, that's just not made from chicken, it isn't that. But it has so much flavour. Great chips.

I'm new to the vegan thing, and so when our waitress asked if we wanted any sauces, Hannah and I looked at each other and froze. Can you ask for mayo in a vegan restaurant, or is that offensive? Is it called vegan-aise, mayo-noze? I can't remember the last time I panicked when out for food. Yes I can. It was a Sunday and the waiter said there was only three roast dinners left and four of us were eating. When Hannah opted for pie instead, I knew she was The One.

Thankfully our waitress saved us "ketchup or mayo?" Phew. It wasn't the same as mayo, but pretty good to dunk the chunky chips into.

They've started doing a Sunday roast, just look at the pics on their Instagram. It looks amazing. You've got to book. Don't worry we will, I'm not missing out on that one!

Hannah & Tom

xxx

@peachstore_vegankitchen

89 St James's Street PO30 1LB Newport, Isle of Wight

Welcome to Betty and Brah, we're Tom and Hannah.
