We moved to the Isle of Wight in the Summer of 2019 with our dog Buddy. Betty and Brah is our sustainable fashion store - we wanted to tell you how it all started.

That's us.

We both wanted to live by the sea (ok, we can't forget Buddy, he was pretty keen too), and timing wise through luck more than planning, 2019 became the year to do it. To take a massive leap of faith, jump into the unknown and pack up life in Oxfordshire and set up on the island.

We love life on the island, and you can kinda see Buddy does too.

In Oxfordshire we recycled. We used steel water bottles instead of buying single use plastic ones, and we tried to remember to take our travel coffee cups with us. But that's about as much as we cared about the planet.

Something changed when we moved to the Isle of Wight. We think living less than 5 minutes walk from the beach has a major part to play in it, but very quickly we became much more aware of the damage we're doing to the planet. The rubbish we would see on the beaches, and littering from visiting holiday makers - every day we'd see more and more examples of this pretty cool planet being damaged.

And that's when the ideas for Betty and Brah began to form. We discovered this awesome company on the island called Teemill, who had created the worlds first sustainable fashion e-commerce platform. Wowza. That's a bit of a mouthful. In essence they create organic cotton products using renewable energy, with a completely transparent supply chain. These products get printed on demand, no wastage, here on the island and shipped worldwide the same day.

So on our doorstep we had the resource to create our own brand, build a business, but also actively be involved in changing how the fashion industry works. For every 5 t-shirts that are bought this year, 3 will be in rubbish before the end of December. It's just crazy, the planet can't sustain it. With 100 billion fashion items made every year, the problem is a huge one, so the solution needs to be just as big.

On all of our products is a QR code. At the end of the products life, or when you're bored of it (we're not offended, honest) that code gives you freepost and a store credit when you send the item back.

Your old tee then gets deconstructed with hundreds of others, and made into new fabric, to start life as a new product. This is the Circular economy, this is our Circular tee.

There it is, in all it's glory.

It's the first of it's kind in the world, and is designed to never, ever enter landfill. Can you see why we get so excited about Betty and Brah?

We both love the ocean so much, and spent our early dates watching surfing movies so it seemed natural that our store was influenced by beach life, and the name came from it. The surfing world has it's own amazing language, so much more than the stereotyped rad, bodacious and knarly, and it was the easy inspiration for our brand name.

We both have so much fun creating the store, and posting on our Facebook and Instagram, we wanted our store to be His and Hers, translate that into surfing tongue, and Betty & Brah was born.

We spend our weekends exploring the Island, which pretty much always involves a cafe or pub. In our Blog, we're going to take you on that journey so when you get the chance to visit, you've got yourself a guide book of the best places to walk, explore, eat and drink, from two nocals (thats new-locals).

See you back here very soon for our first adventure...

We visited Peach - the vegan cafe and zero waste store in Newport, OW.
