Walk to Bembridge
A long scenic walk from Seaview to Bembridge ~ half along the beautiful beaches, half meandering into the town leads you to a lush pub situation on end low cliff above Bembridge beach.

Back in the Summer we walked from Seagrove Bay, along the shore line of Priory Bay with its unspoilt pale white sands, and crystal clear turquoise water, so that when the sunshines you could be fooled you'd be transported to a Caribbean Island. Yes, we have good imaginations, but if you've been there, I'd be willing to bet that you'd agree.

You take the rocky corner, which at low, low tide means you can just about keep dry feet as you follow the waters edge along the next pebble beach to St Helen's. Look left and you see Bembridge, but thanks to the estuary entering the harbour, the route to walk there is not quite as direct. The most direct route means following the narrow road from the seafront towards Bembridge, then cutting across the flood plains to the raised walkway that cuts across the end of the harbour. You walk with "the pond" on your right, which at low tide may be a low series of pools, or at high tide a huge 5-10 foot deep, well, pond.

The end of the walkway leads you to the main road which you follow with the harbour immediately on your left all the way into Bembridge. About a mile before reaching the town, a footpath on the left leads you through the back of houses, down a tree lined path and cuts you across the coastline into the heart of Bembridge. We zigzagged along roads lined with quaint bungalows to hit our ultimate destination of The Crab and Lobster.

Sun blazing we sat in the sun while two local guys aka 'The Usual Suspects' played a great acapella accompaniment to our lunch. Fast forward three months, and with friends coming to stay from the mainland, we knew the two hour walk with the lure of a great lunch spot would be the perfect way to spend a cold but sunny November Saturday.

It nearly all went to plan. With the tide not quite low enough, we had to cut through the woods at the end of Priory Bay. Really heavy rain turned what could have been a short cut into what felt more like a Bear Grylls expedition. Trekking (and a lot of slipping) through the muddy and waterlogged footpaths, it add a good 40 mins onto the walk, and we made it to the pub with a few blisters and seriously hungry bellies.

The pub is vast, with several split off rooms, so even when really full, you can imagine the space still feels really intimate, and never really noisy. The place is oozing character, beautifully designed, with amazing attention to detail, lamps, pots, oil cans and a plethora of other props carefully placed to create an authentic and inviting space.

[Hannah] The walk was so good, despite navigating the muddiest woods. So peaceful, and such insanely beautiful beaches. We were so hungry when we got to The Crab and Lobster, we quickly ordered starters. Cheesy garlic bread - sometimes you just fancy something so simple. It was good, the right balance of crispy baguette and loaded with stringy cheese. Four really good veggie options, for mains I was so tempted by the halloumi and roasted veggie burger that I had in the summer, that I nearly had it again, but I wanted to try something else so had the halloumi and spinach linguini. Portions are mega generous, I wondered at one point if it was a self refilling dish. Really tasty, the pasta was smothered in a seriously garlicy creamy sauce. Really great food in a great location.

[Tom] The prospect of going more than two hours without food slightly terrifies me, however when I know theres a chunky slice of steak and mushroom pie with homemade gravy and creamy mash on the other end I'll do the walk over and over again. To start I had the pork and game terrine. It was really moreish spread onto toast triangles, and it had a really authentic homemade quality. I would have liked the game flavour to be a bit more prominent, but that's just my tastebuds - a really hearty starter. For main, the steak and mushroom pie. That's what I chose last time, and it was so, so good it was a no brainer. It was just too tempting to not have again, and I'd been dreaming about it for most of the walk. It's a long walk, just about far enough for Buddy to fully exhaust his little legs and pass out while we sit and drink a Guinness or two... LOVELY.

We visited Peach - the vegan cafe and zero waste store in Newport, OW.
